Aside from the

of Toyota not thinking of floor mat hooks, the important point is a foreign company's habit of seemingly not cooperating with our federal government (or outright concealment of information). That's what gets my goat.

Do you know for a fact that the Lexus in question doesn't have floor mat hooks? I know for certain that Camrys have had them for many years, so I would guess that Lexus uses them too. I think the problem may be that if they break and the mat shifts, the gas pedal is too close to the floor when depressed. Too bad the article didn't link to any actual details about the recall.
For the record,
Toyota denied that it failed to report the problem "in a timely manner".

If you like something lengthy to read while in the necessary room, here ya' go:

I bring this up mainly due to the fact that I hear people all of the time dimissing American-made cars as "junk," while anything foreign-made is superior without question.

Thanks. I don't usually take the laptop in there with me, but maybe I'll make an exception in this case.
I'm not a hater (or fanboy) of any particular brand, and I know that Toyota makes some damn good cars despite all the bad -- no, overhyped -- press it's received lately. My wife's '02 Camry with 134K on it has had exactly two repairs done to it in ten years -- a new gas cap and a dash-light bulb, and it still gets 32+ mpg on the highway. It's tough to argue with
that kind of success.

Likewise, my '95 Neon had just two things go wrong with it in eight years (the rear lap seat belts came from Belvidere installed upside down and the batttery went dead a few weeks after delivery). It was regularly getting 38-42 MPG at 121K miles when I traded it in for my '02 SXT. The common wisdom is to avoid buying new models until the bugs are worked out but this certainly wasn't my experience.

And yet, the american people will be brain washed into thinking imports are FAR superior to domestics, even when the truth has been the exact opposite for the last 5 years......SMH

One of the most recent issues of
Car and Driver listed the top five automakers for 2012 recalls and Toyota headed the list (the other four were foreign automakers as well). The article also listed the five 2012 vehicles with the smallest number of recalls and the domestically-produced (Canada) VW Routan made that list. Of course, we all know that the Routan is essentially a Chrysler Town and Country.
