Head gasket?

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

Head gasket?

Post by FormerlyREDRT_98 » Thu Apr 04, 2013 12:11 am

After work today I noticed what looked like fresh oil stains under my car. Popped the hood and noticed what looks like oil on top of the transmission and some on the bottom. When I got home I put a piece of cardboard under the engine but when I just checked it, the cardboard is still clean

Anything with the car running? If its coming out the top it will probably need to be under pressure

more likely to be a cam seal leaking than a blown head gasket

I haven't looked with the engine running.

I don't think it's a cam seal, aren't those at the front of the engine, passenger side?

That's the cam sensor seal. They leak. Or valve cover gasket. If its the headgasket leaking oil out, it'd be under pressure and pour out.

So I have to get a new cam seal. While I'm at it I should also get new end links since I have one that's broken. Maybe I'll also get new gaskets for the header since I'll be getting a magnum header. Just get it all at once

The rear main will get oil everywhere also. It was even dripping from the starter.

On my '01, the CPS seal just ran between the engine and bell housing on the backside, and out the bottom. There was not oil anywhere else.

But each case is different. I would start with the CPS seal, and see what happens. Brake clean around the cps seal and see if it returns there.

A rear main leak on a cable housing would come out the top as shown, on a hydro bellhousing not so much since the opening is on the bottom. I've had CPS leaks just like his.
