Muffler - Hanger Bracket - Vibrations - WTF

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

Muffler - Hanger Bracket - Vibrations - WTF

Post by packfan88 » Tue Apr 23, 2013 12:47 pm

How do you know if you need a new muffler? Ive never replaced one. Mine either is not muffling anything or soethign else is going on. Sounds like I have an aftermarket rice pipe on there but its factory. I can see some rust on the endges of the muffler in spots. I also checked out the rubber hanger in the back. A bit dry. Maybe its transfering the sound vibratios up to the rear quarter and the trunk is acting like a sub-woofer box. The day i got it the seats were down so I thought it was just because they were not up. wrong. Even up its still loud.

So id rather start with a $5 part. Im going to change the rubber mount. Anyone know what I need to buy as far as sizing goes?

that is deffinetly not happening. listen to it from outside the vehicle. if it sounds like that out there, then just replace the muffler. but shit, if you just wanna throw money at it till it's fixed just replace the muffler, the cat, the rubber mounts, etc

i'll throw a $5 bill at it any day lol

It doesnt do it while at idle or when someone revs the engine while parked. Only while in motion. and you can tell when you go over the crest of a small hill (like a stomach lifting bump not a pot hole) because the sound stops. Also when I go around a sweeping right hand turn it subsides for a split second or two and then resumes once the car returns to level.

actually I already bent that out of the way. It was "another" rattle that i knew right away what it was. The shield aroudn the cat was rattling on the passenger side floor board. this is def in the back passenegr side.

The rubber mount would need to be damn hard and brittle to transfer that much vibration. It sounds more like a pipe, or the muffler is actually contacting the body. Even coat hangers don't give you sound transfer to the body. Are the other two rubber hangers intact?

It may be contacting where it goes through the rear crossmember area.

im gonna check those things and see. Its pretty loud. More loud when going on left sweeps. Its very noticible to even a deaf person cause you can feel it too.

I wasnt sure if its just what a muffler does when it goes bad or what.

When i di d aquick inspection i was just looking to see if there was an aftermarket muffler on there (some call it a fart can) or something. Then i saw the hanger rubber dry and cracked.

I was in a rush so i didnt get a chance to see how the exhaust path runs or what attahes to what but i'll check it out.

Its gonna be nice out tomorrow so its a GSXR day.

:withstupid: I've had my 3" exhaust sit on the crossmember before and it gave off a tin-like sound and vibrated the car when I got on it. Another place could be the spare tire well, but I can't remember if the 2.0 exhaust sits close to that or not.

not touching anything.

im going to order a muffler and see what that does. I dont need hipo like magnaflow for 150 bucks. i saw under the car the exhaust looks like one piece ot the muffler so i guess i just sawzall off the exhaust piping and put a connector and then to the muffler?

i saw a walker on rockauto for like $50
