miss I can hear in the exhast now

Post by whynot » Sat May 11, 2013 10:58 pm

So I bought this car, with a little miss in it. Now I think I may have made a mistake. Not noticeable at the time of purchase. is a sound out of the tail pipe. So I am sure that the miss that is setting codes is due to an exhaust valve, unless I should look further? or test something else.

This does not happen at high rpm, just idle. Could it be a spring?

Could this be just from not being ran and being on the lot for so long?
I am really bumbed out right now. and looking for options on which way to go.

Thanks
Doug

When running down the road all seems fine.
At idle, I get a p0304, cyl #4 misfire detected.
Now that I have driven it for a few days there is a more noticeable sound at the exhaust of the car, I have not removed the air cleaner to listen there.
You can feel the rough idle and now hear it at the exhaust. The plugs are all ok, as in there is no oil in the tube at the bottom, and they all looked the same when they were changed. There was old oil burnt onto the side of the #3 plug. But that has since been replaced, no oil in the bottom of the tube. I can see the head around the plug and it looks clean.

I think I will swap plug wires 1 and 4 and see if it moves. But I do not know what to do from there.

Thanks

Did you only replace the #3 spark plug? Since your replacing the wires, i would just go ahead and swap all the plugs out as well. Personally I would do the plugs first, at $2 a piece its the cheaper option. You want champion or ngk copper spark plugs.

I personally had a crazy misfire some years ago just after replacing my plugs with bocsh platinum plugs :banghead:. Replaced with champion copper plugs and misfire was gone

I changed all of the plugs. with NGK. and nothing changed.
What confuses me, is how a misfire from a plug will cause a popping sound at the exhaust.
I am going to swap the 1 and 4 wire now.
Thanks

misfires can also come from injectors. try swapping the 1 and 4 injectors to see if the code follows
