great news! but...

Post by OB » Sun Feb 05, 2006 3:38 pm

im going to school at UTI in august to get my auto education. I enrolled friday afternoon, and signed my name on the dotted line to come up with 31k for tuition. that means i need as many grants, scholarships, and gov funds i can get. so i just became the poorest, cheapest dude on here. as most of you know, i tend to spend a LOT of money on my car when i get mods and whatnot. This all has to change. From now on, my car might have to, *brace yourselves*, give up mods... For over a year... im very sad about this but i guess i have to make this major sacrifice for my future. So the TEIN coilovers, nice wheels and tires, lip kit, TB, sways, CFjunk, ... all that stuff has to wait; a LONG time... please cheer me up!!!! anyone have tips for getting thru all this? im gonna go into a deep depression if i have to stop buyin shit for my car, seriously..

Well, if it helps, your Neon looks awesome just the way it is. I have always liked the Orange blast Neons stock. Mine is mostly stock so your not alone. Congrats on the education front. Make the most of it and it will pay off in a few years for you. Then you'll be able to mod twice as fast. The best of luck to you. :D

Im pretty much in the same boat as you, im going to school in the fall, but I have scholarships and grants to cover it, so guess thats not much of a help....

I know I have to save money for books and stuff, but i know im gonna spend that money on mods for my neon.....what to do now: Save up like 5-600 dollars....right now, put it into a savings account, and put in like 50 bucks a month......let it gain interest....that right there, is your " mod money" account.

Do something like that, and you can still get what you wanted.

( the money I have saved up is supposed to be for my project 68 mustang, but i ended up blowing it all on school)

Look on the bright side, once you finish school and get a good paying job, youll be able to afford a much nicer car than a neon to mod.

....I will get a 03-04 sonic blue Cobra convertible.... one day.

I think UTI will walk you through getting government/educational loans like most trade-related schools.
As far as mods go, buy used off of 2GN. Save up for shit like I do. Buy my Eibachs/KYB's on the cheap. There's still lots you can do, you just gotta' be patient and save. Mow lawns, trim trees. Sell you MTB, Comic Books, extra guitar on Craigslist. There is money to be had.

Well, I just finished my education at Wyotech and the tuition for mine was 21K.

I have to start paying back my student loans in 5 months, they are only $96 a month though:

There is a picture from my graduation, you can kinda see the Wyotech Eagle on the diploma, and that is an honor graduate medal around my neck too :)

orange did you ever think of attending a CSU school instead? I mean we have it made here in CA you can go a pretty good school for relatively cheap and get a BA or BS. I go to CSU Fresno and tuition is only about $2400 a year.. so if you dont mess up thats less than $10k for a four year degree. I get financial aid so i pay NOTHING plus get an $1800 check each semester

only downside is they dont offer anything in the automotive field, closest you could get would be mechanical engineering.. thats what im going for. if the training you get at UTI is exactly what you want, then forget everything i just said :P

as far as your money/mods situation goes, you can always find something on the car to clean, and thats usually free! I mean, you can spend hours and hours with a toothbrush getting your engine and suspension clean.. and a clean engine gets you just as many points as a bling engine at the shows.. just a suggestion  work on perfecting the details of the car rather than the major $$ mods for now. then in a year when you go to install those coilovers, the rest of suspension will look just as good as those brand new TEINs

good luck with school.

what gets me through is knowing that i am going to pretty much walk into a $50000/year job right out of school and that i can get a new truck, redo the monte ss, get a house (i hate apartment living) and stop going to school.

is that $31000 total or ??? for me it will have cost almost $60000 for school and living expenses, and ill have two degrees, an AAS in Mechanical Engineering Technology (already have it) and a BS in Mechanical Engineering.

A mechanical engineer might learn a few of the skills needed to fix cars along the way, but it teaches you more of how to design things. There will be some projects in the curriculum, but not nearly as much hands-on training as there is at an auto mechanic school. Besides, it takes much longer to get a BS in mechanical engineering than it does to get an auto mechanic trade certificate. They're more into design and analysis of mechanical systems rather than maintenance. They might have the theoretical know-how to fix things, but they don't get much practical experience.

One time, a physicist told me that he considered himself "a jack of all trades, but a master of none" - he could understand why things were going berzerk in his car, but he claimed not to know how to fix them (and that practical matters were not his strong point).

You are absolutely right, thats not what i was saying at all, just that if someone enjoys learning how things work together, modifying, designing, etc. (like we do to our cars), then mechanical engineering might be something to look into. Of course, if you say screw math i just want to work on cars then UTI is one of the better places to learn how. By no means could an engineer with no automotive background do a mechanics job or vise versa, but it seems to me they both have the same mentality, so again just something to look into. Plus generally more $$

game software design sounds pretty fun.. is it done mostly with graphic interface or is there alot of source code writing? I am only 3 weeks into programming and i wanna burn my book and strangle the instructor.. i dont see how people do it

After he got out of HS he went into it... I haven't really talked to him since but I did stop in a see one of my teachers like 4-6 months ago and she mentioned him. I think he's having fun, just started working for a game company but it doesn't look like a walk in the park type job. It's programming, I took a few programming classes in HS and after doing it I couldn't stand it for the life of me. I mean it's alright, pay will be good but it's a lot to remember and talking to a few people that made medical software it just wasn't for me. Too many late nights since they were saying they'll have a death march week where when they need to wrap up a software package for a company so they'll be working 20hr days to get everything together. It might be different in the gaming industry but programming is programming. It was just me but for that 2 years that I did it in HS which was only easy VB I knew it wasn't for me. I'm more of a network systems person and have been tinkering in networking for years now on the home network I setup, that stuff really interests me and is what I'm looking forward to learning... programming stretches my paitence. Basic HTML is easy... take a simple VB class first if you never have and make sure you like it... that'll give you an idea what it'll be like. It can be really interesting and even come in handy sometimes. I broke out a few of my old books when i was at my old job and made a few programs to make my day easier... but it still just wasn't what I wanted to do everday.
