timing tensioner insides

Post by v793jt0 » Tue Sep 24, 2013 1:52 am

so i got my timing kit and when i got to the tensioner i realized it was only the bearing it did not have the inside of it( the spring and stuff that gives tension also it seem a slightly smaller diameter than one on the car... it looks like it is the dnj timing bearing...http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/x,carco ... ttype,5721
how can i swap the inside of the bearing from the old to new one?

If it is the TBT150, it is only the idler.

The TBT151B will mount to the bracket, if you have the correct bracket.

Otherwise you may need the entire 2004 style bracket assy.

Does your original look like the brackets in that link? Is there a hole in the back of the timing cover for the bracket to fit in, or was/is yours the hydraulic set up?

You may be able to sell the 150. Not sure why that is even shown for the application. It is an idler for the DOHC timing system. You need the 151.

Did you buy everything else needed/related, or just that?

Hmmm, I'm not able to check the box my set came in (at my buddy's house and he is out of town till Friday! ACK!!!), but hoping I got the right one from Rock Auto... DNJ ENGINE COMPONENTS Part # TBK149BWP Doesn't have the tensioner bracket. 2003 SE 2.0 SOHC. If I got the wrong one, I'd rather know now than after tearing things down...

wow you get 36 mpg? I usually get from 28 to 33...
how many miles does your car have?

and you should be good with yours ...tbk149bwp is the right one for your car.. I just realized I got the tbk149wp which is for the hydraulic tensioner which I dont know why they have it listed for later than 02 cars...

I guess ill have to see if the belts is still them same.. and then try to see if rockauto will change the tensioner and if not I guess ill have to spend an extra 40 dollars on the right tensioner :(

Belt, water pump, etc should all be the same. Yeah, the hydro tensioner pulley is basically the same concept as the DOHC extra idler.

Not sure if they are the same part tho. I forgot about the hydro being a fixed type idler.

Depends on return shipping if it is worth exchanging the parts, or just trying to sell the idler, or eat the cost.

The hydro was still used in 2001, so it was probably carried over on some '02 cars.

In addition, some folks prefer the hydro set up over the mechanical. More or less, high lift cams are known to break the spring in the mechanical tensoiner.

Yeah, Rock Auto shows hydraulic tensioner as well for 2003s.

And yes, I have had a couple tanks (all highway) where I was at 39.8. My son had a couple 40.5 tanks and once, had a tank at 41 something. That banner is old and I haven't updated it in some time, likely closer to 32 right now. I don't carry near as much stuff in the Neon as I do in my Jeep, but have been able to keep my Grand Cherokee between 20-21 MPG at times.

When I used to commute between Nevada and California years, twisty canyon roads were too inviting and had plenty of tanks under 25...
