Something odd happened

Post by Ramroid » Fri Jan 31, 2014 8:05 pm

I have an 02 SXT. For some reason when i started the car this morning, the traction control light, and ABS light was on. Car didn't drive any different at all. The SXT didn't even come with ABS or traction control did it?? Any reason the lights would come on that anyone is aware of?

You should have a switch at the cubby to turn Trac control on or off. You may have a short in your wiring somewhere, or a cluster issue.

None of these really address a non ABS/Trac Control car, but might give some clues.

If you do have a pigtail behind there, something may be grounding in there.

There was also a thread about using the trac on light as an indicator for other things, too, but can't seem to find it. It may have just been part of a discussion...

No switch that im aware of. It'd be beside the desfrost button, and there isn't one. It all happened after i started up my car in subzero temps, so that could have something to do with it. My mechanic said its probably my wheel speed sensor and accumulation of ice. Granted the average temp here for the last month has been 5 degrees, i'll wait and see if it corrects itself. Brake fluid is fine. Worst comes to worse ill pop the cluster out of my donor car and toss it in to see if it just a gauge issue

Well if you don't have traction control, you probably don't have ABS, thus no wheel speed sensors.

Not sure if they optioned ABS and traction control separately. You cannot have traction control without ABS tho. But the other way around, yes.

Well, the car has literally every option available from the factory, its stock. I don't have a toggle for the traction control what so ever, i looked. I braved the 4 degree weather and took a peek. Dad said(35+ years as a gear head) that i probably have front abs with low speed traction control built in. He said it wasn't impossible. I haven't been able to track down all the options the car came with, i dont have the window sticker. I'll have him plugin his snapon in in a little bit and see if any codes are being thrown.

if you dont have the button you dont have trac control, it was an acr/rt option only. you may have abs though, in which case you would have wheel sensors. i know both indicators will come on if the 30a fuse is blown out or removed in the PDC under the hood. might have been a connection issue due to cold. i honestly wouldnt worry unless this was a re-accuring problem

Well, from what i've read on trim level differences, you CAN get traction control on the SXT as an option. Even though you can't toggle it on or off. Idk, i want to find the build sheet on my car and see if it came with it. I don't know, this car has confused me since i bought it. Haven't seen a loaded neon before this car, most were pretty basic.

I didn't email them, they had a vin# lookup right on their site. Couldnt find anything about ABS or trac control. Then again i didn't either when i ran my m3's vin last week, and i know for sure it has both. So eh

Well to make it really simple, just open the hood, and see if there is an ABS module plumbed into the brake lines. If it is just a MC with 4 lines going back to the firewall, then there is no ABS, or trac control.

Well if you really want to know what your car was built with, go to your local Chrysler corp dealer. Go to the parts dept, and ask the critter behind the counter that you want the build sheet for your car. Be prepared to prove that the car is yours. Typically, they'll run a VIP summary report, which includes the build sheet. That report details all the standard equipment and all the options the car was built with.
Looking for the ABS HCU and module near the master cylinder is a fast and easy way to find out if the car has ABS. But, aside from the presence of the the traction control button, you'll still need the build sheet to find out if the car has traction control.

Shouldn't need to prove ownership to get the build sheet, since you can get it online/emailing them. I got the build sheet for my '99 before I even transferred the title.

The big thing with proving ownership, is getting the key cut code. Then you need to have all your ducks lined up, and saluting.

I know this is a little late, but wanted to add this; Some dealerships want proof that it's your car, and some don't. That's why i always say, be prepared. Better to be prepared and not need to prove it than to be stuck w/o your paperwork.
