welp im gonna bite the bullet

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

welp im gonna bite the bullet

Post by dawm » Sun Feb 12, 2006 8:49 pm

yep.. once i get my tax refund (should be any day now) im gonna order me up a AF/X R pcm, safc2, #14 cam and gear, and get a ebay udp.. i have my 02 acr core pcm on its way to me. so it should be fun.. i just hope i get the af/x before the end of may cause DNO's doing their dyno day around that time and ill need to get tuned with all the goodies.. but my problem is.. what do do after that? after i have all that installed i'd have the following.

ICE-MAN CAI
LFS 60mm TB
Prothane RACE inserts
FF Long tube w/ cutout & custom 2.5" exhaust
Crane #14 w/ adj. gear
SAFC II
AF/X RACE PCM
UDP

what would be the next step performance wise? lighter wheels? better rubber? ported intake mani? theres not much left bolt on wise after all that is there?

you make it handle! i think the ability to handle is far greater in terms of a return when it comes to suspension work over engine performance. being able to handle well, as well as no longer having lift-throttle oversteer as badly (i have swaybars, coilovers, and a strut brace... i can still get lift throttle oversteer but its more predictable and it doesnt *SNAP* like it used to), can help you avoid an accident in the first place. our cars are fairly unsafe in the event of an accident however they do fair pretty well in avoiding an accident. im just capitalizing on that.

another thing to consider is light weight wheels. for the same price as a cam and labor, you can find a set of 15x7 kosei k1 wheels. rather than only affecting engine performance (cam), lighter wheels give you better acceleration, handling, braking, and gas mileage.... just something to think about

yeah but kosei's are ass ugly =(

i figured on doing the suspension, but wasnt too sure, i have a rear strut brace orderd, already have the 'vibrant' show piece front brace, i guess wheels/rubber/sways and maybe new struts would be next. im still rocking the stock r/t struts with eibach prokit springs (eh they came with the car)

After doing engine mods and handling mods... i can definatly agree with the handling mods. I made some friends near shit their pants when i did an INSTANT lane change at 30MPH the other day (In other words, as hard and fast as you can, change lanes. Maybe a whole 1/2 second?). And the people behind me (friends) said my car looked crazy cuz it was flat the entire change (no body roll!)

The sway bar setup is easily by far one of the best mods you can do. For a budget, the welfare setup is great! 26mm GT front end and your choice of rear end (most go with ACR 19mm, i would personaly do a 22mm or better). Not to mention the mild oversteer is just... awesome.

Also, stock rubber's GOTTA GO! Get yourself some 205/55/15 tires (whatever brand. I have some crap ZEIX from les schwab and they hold decently for now... 340 tred wear rating?)

The UDP is definatly one to get though... unless the CEL code problem is gonna haunt you like most 02 peoples...

Outside of that, you should be pretty good. The stock struts are good for now im sure (unless they are blown!). My Konis are ultra stiff, definatly recommended if you want to handle like crazy.

Damn you. Beating me to the 14 and other stuff. Have you got ur exhaust figured out yet? I am having a hard time thinking of what I am gonna do when I put the longtube on. I want an afx computer too but I am scared about the wait.

I would look into gettting a intake manifold. Since with the 14 you will be needing more air. Maybe even have your head ported.
