xm radio
I was just curious where you guys put your xm radios in your vehicles. I just got one, and have nowhere to mount it. I just wanted to see some other installs so that I have an idea. Mine isnt a cd deck or anything, its a separate unit that comes with an antenna and it plugs into the lighter in your car. Any advice?

Ahem, I'm a sirius subscriber, but i imagine that your portable unit is just like ours. Anyway, my receiver came with a suction cup stand, and instead of drilling or mounting it onto an uneven surface on the dash, i stick it in one of the open cupholders. I have it angled perfectly so the remote can always reach it. If someone else is in the car with me, I'll have it face them or if they have a drink, I'll just move it.

looks like you got a better deal then i did when it came to the mount. I got a swivel mount with some 2 sided tape on it to stick it to the dash. The material of the dash doesnt allow the tape to stick to it. At first I thought it was the tape, but then i sat it down on the computer stand. BIG mistake. the damn thing wouldnt come off. So I am thinking about making my own little stand for it, ill post pictures.

The stand is attached to the back. It would be nice if it bends to 90 degrees but it doesnt. So i might have to rig something up so that I can place it above the vents in the middle of the dash. Another location I was thinking of is sticking out the side of the center console on the passenger side, somewhat to the side of the vents. I want it accessable to the passenger and the driver. Plus i dont want it to be harmful if there was an accident, so those are the locations I can think of.

Have you guys had to custom rig these units up, even if it isnt this exact one. What about different locations. Im just lookin for a cool way to put this thing. I just dont want it to get in the way of my driving, or obstruct my vision or anything.

That stinks dude, sorry. Just keep asking people how they got theirs set up.
I personally like the idea of the portable receiver. I was thinking about hooking up the satellite directly into the car's aftermarket receiver but if i did that, I'd lose all the features of the portable one. My pioneer unit is satellite ready but I would still need the satellite antenna/receiver, which is a 100 bucks. To hell with that! So I started to look around and found the starmate replay. It's awesome! It's sometimes a pain with the loading, plugging in, unloading etc., but it more than makes up the hassle with the features like, pausing, rewinding, forwarding live radio, a seek list of my favorite bands etc.
With the satellite hooked directly into the Pioneer unit, I'd loose all that!

*Edit* xm install
Thanks to Outkast's suggestion, here's my stab at it; don't mind the wires or the mess
:

I have more pics if anyone else is interested in doing the same for their portable satellite receivers.
Thanks again to Outkast!

I used the double sided tape that was provided with my xm kit. The other thing that I had to buy was an fm modulator. What this does, is that it works with the unit to block out any signal that might get thru on the fm station you are using to broadcast the xm signal. In my area, there is a local station that broadcasts on the 88.1 frequency, so this was causing alot of static, but the modulator solved it that problem. But you have to watch out with the sales person, they will try and convince you that you need something else because supposedly the modulator will not be as loud, but that is bullshit. They just trying to make the sale on the an item that is more expensive. Oh by the way, I mounted mine right infront of the atx shifter and the cup holders. Out of the way, but still visible by the two from occupants. The backseat would have to lean forward to catch a glimpse of what is going on!
