Cam Gear question
Cam Gear question
Can 2g R/T's or 2g neons in general, use an adjustable cam gear?
I was thinking about installing one when the timing belt gets changed on the car. Than maybe spend a day at the dyno playing with the stock cam, getting all i can out of it. I don't plan on highly modding my car, it would just give me a little more "play" on the powerband and power for that matter.
The mods I'd have would be:
Ebay AEM knock-off intake
MPx Underdrive Pulley
either SRT stock-catback, or a Thermal R&D muffler.
If i could make 140whp I'd be happy. I'm not changing the computer, or anything major like that.
Thanks!

Do I have to do anything special to use the cam gear? Someone once told me i had to take out the top motor mount on hte passenger side to use it, or something to that affect.

removing the side motor mount adds 3 minutes to the process. however, once you get it set, it should be a "set and forget" deal.
i wouldnt recommend a cam gear with a stock cam, its a waste of money

i wouldnt even buy the adj cam gear. look at 99% of howell's past NA build ups in the neons.... the SOHC 2.0's are using the crane #14 and the stock cam gear
i really dont even think its worth the hassle for the time/tuning involved for that additional 2hp... now DOHC i could see, but SOHC adj cam gear is pretty much only making sure the cam is correctly centerligned

tells how it works out...i actually had one so i have to say that you can make the car run a lot more efficiently. seat in the pants you can "feel" the car not run full power because slight timing deviations make big differences... i had the timing belt off by 2.5 teeth the first time i did a timing belt change and the car ran like a freakin tractor and sputterd like mad. you're right, you get a lot more from a dohc because you have more adjustability for both intake and exhaust cycles; on the single cam you just move the power band up and down more or less, but basically you can tune to give your engine more air when it needs it, and help a bit with exhaust scavanging... i dont know about the stocker, but if hte magnum is ALMOST as big as the #12 then you'll see results. i dont think you need a dyno, you'll have a good idea which way to go in the tuning... advance timing as much as you can and then back off a degree at a time;
start at zero and drive for a day or two... set to +2 and drive for a day or two... set to -2, drive for a bit, brobably not like it, and go back to trying to advance the timing... you'll soon start feeling the differences in acceleration and eagerness to accelerate
