dash harness

Post by apk2k6 » Tue Feb 21, 2006 3:08 pm

Would an srt-4 dash harness work in my SE? I'm trying to install power options, thanks.

Dang : (. Well I already have the door panels, door harnesses and motors for the power options. Would it be easier to just get an aftermarket kit? Such as the door locks and windows, I could still hook these up to the switches in the door panel right. If so, how would I do the power mirrors?

And how do these hook up, I wouldn't need any kind of harness correct?

Sorry for all the questions, I really want to get this done :\

so does anyone know if this is connected to the dash harness or the interior harness? I'm talking about the connector coming from the car, not the door.

let me get some schematics for ya to help you out. But remove the top of your dash & at the center of the top, just in front of the defrost vents should be a black box. or a harness plug that should be for your power options

damn man, not what i wanted to hear, but thanks for helping. Would I also need the "interior" harness that I've heard about, or just the dash harness? I wonder if a shop would be willing to trade it out for me :\

Do you have a pic of what it's supposed to look like(the dash wiring)

Well I called a place around here and they gave me a crazy estimate, he didnt know for sure but to put the dash harness in, probably $500+, forget that. So if I bought the aftermarket windows/locks kit I wouldn't have to put a new dash harness in right?

I could wire it to my door panels I bought too, but how would I get the power mirrors to work? Ahhh I'm started to lose hope haha

Don't be so scared of a little harness. Ok a biiiigg harness. It runs along the top as you've seen and twists behind your radio and a/c bezel, then it drops down and runs to your ebrake switch and airbag sensor. Hehe....that's it in a nutshell. The door connector you were referring to is attached to the dash harness. To swap it you'll have to pull the entire dash. There should be like 8 or 9 nuts and bolts, yes it has both, holding it in. Then you have the fun of the steering column which also needs to come out to remove the dash. The center console needs to come out so you might as well take the front seats out at the same time. Then you also have an atx, I'm not sure what wiring that entails as i've only worked on mtx's.

If you want to know what it attaches to here's a list.

Driver's door
Fuse box
Main harness box
Body harness
Cluster
Map lights/mirror i.e. compass, thermo
Steering column (skim, multi switch, wiper controls)
Hvac controls
Radio
Cigarette lighter/power outlet
Rear defrost
Wiper motors
Shifter? not sure on atx
Air bag module
E-brake switch
Hvac blower
Antenna
Airbags
Glove box light/trunk switch
Passenger door
And there are a few grounds spread throughout.

Don't know if that helps. The trouble with trying to add power options is that your door harnesses aren't set up for it so you'd have to run the wiring either through new holes separately. Or if you're really daring you can try pinning them in the door connectors and running them like they are stock.

EDIT: Forgot one more thing. The mirror harnesses are part of the door harness. If you want I can try to save the door harnesses when i get that acr in.

I already have the door harnesses, thanks though.

I guess I'll give it a try during spring break, that gives me over a week to try and do it haha. So an srt-4 dash harness should work correct? Just want to make sure before buying it.

Also, what does the body harness connect to? I need that as well for the back doors correct? Thanks for that list, it doesn't seem as scary now for some reason haha.

Ive done the dash wiring several times, its really not a big deal. theres just a lot of little screws and nuts and making sure to route the wires correctly so they lay in the right places. Nothing needs to be cut and no connector needs to be taken apart to fish wires around.

And yes, youll need the body harness for the locks in the rear doors. It connects to the dash harness and contains all the wiring from the dash back to the tail lights.

So is the body harness a pain or is it even easier than the dash harness? I guess I'll give it a shot.

How long did it take you the first time you did the dash harness? I'm going to wake up probably one morning around 9-10 during spring break and do it all day for however long it takes, thanks.

neither one is really more difficult than the other. Its just a process to take EVERYTHING apart, re-run the wiring, and put it all back together again.

The first time I pulled a dash compleatly out too me about 2 hours. I can do it in about 45min. now. Going back together is about the same, but it depends on what all youre doing/installing while its going back together.

O wow 2 hours to pull out then 2 hours to put in isn't bad, did you take a plug out, then replace it with the new harness one? Or did u take out the whole harness and just kind of guess where everything plugged into? Thanks for this info

Just pull the entire dash out and work outside of the car to swap them. All of the connectors are different and you'll recognize them when you go to put them back in.

When you say work outside of the car you mean literally? It'd be kind of hard to reach the stuff from outside wouldn't it lol

I meant, pull the dash out through the door to swap the harness. Otherwise its going to be a major pain in the ass. If you do it outside you can see it from the back and will know how the harness snakes its way through.

O ok so I just need to find the bolts or w/e holding the entire dash in then, and you said there's 9 of them? Do you remember where?

And I'm only this persistent because I'm stubborn, I've gotten just about all the parts and I didn't want to give up on it haha, and I'm sure it will teach me a lot, that's why : )

If you pull off the end caps, such as when accessing the fuse box, there are two bolts on each side. there are 3 on the top towards the front and I believe there are 2 underneath your radio bezel, as in below it not behind it.

Thanks man, the harnesses are on their way now, should be a fun little project haha.

Edit: are you talking about the 2 screws that hold fuse box on or the other 2 screws that are there?

you shouldn't have to worry about any little screws. If you look in front of the fusebox there are 2 bolts. Like 15mm I think. Don't try to take the plastic dash out, just pull the entire steel frame behind it. It's a lot easier.

Because my parents paid for the car and they didn't see paying $200 extra for the power options at the time for some reason :\, so I didn't complain, I got a car.

I'm not afraid of a little work haha, I'm sure I will learn a lot from this too which is good.

Well I received the package today, and it looks like it only has the dash harness, not the body harness too, am I correct? The guy said he'd give me both for the price I paid him, I emailed him though. Here's a pic of what I received:
