RSA's done, Tire Decision Time

Post by Brett R/T » Fri May 14, 2004 3:54 am

The stock 195/50/16 RSA's are toast and i need new tires.

I was planning on getting some 15x7 with 205/50/15 Azenis for Auto-x and to use as a cheap wannabe drag radial (i know it's not). However, i need some all season tires on the stock 16x6 wheels in the mean time.

1) All Season tire suggestions? - I need the best grip possible

2) Sizing? is 205/45/16 too difficult to get on the stock wheel? Other options are 195/50 and 205/50.

Thanks guys....actually if this is the wrong forum, pls move..

I went with a 205/50/16 on my stock 16's. Falken Ziex 512's. Nice looking tire, V rated, cheap. Well there is cheaper, but $96/tire wasn't too bad.

i went 205/45-16 on my stock ones too.. it looks ALOT better. i too went with falken ziex 512's, but in a ZR rated format. i got a deal on them tho, $89 each. i didnt really see a poing in getting a zr rated tire, but they were cheap, and they're AWESOME tires.

i had pirelli p6000 tires on it before, and before my car would break the back end loose with hard driving and feel pretty unstable at times.

now, i can actually feel my suspension in a turn, i can actually make a turn, and say, dam...i need a bigger front swap bar because i feel the car moving out but the tires arent even budgin

I have been thouroughkly surprised and happy with my Hankook ventus HRII, 205/45/16. They have been getting way better 60ft times than my stock RS-A's ever could, and definately handle better in the wet...

oh yeah, prioce was $70 each, and the are H-rated...

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

Those of you with 205/45/16 or others with a slightly shorter tire/wheel combo, how's the wheel gap? I would go with 205/50/16 but the last thing i want to do is make my car slower than it already is even if the difference is small. Any thoughts on this?

Any pics of the gap or cars would be cool too.

i got falken ziex 512's but in 205/55-15. so far i can't complain about them... I put them, on just before we had a big storm last winter and suprisingly my car didn't get stuck except for the tall stuff. I havn't had them to the track yet so i can't help you there but for an all season they are awesome...

oh by the way i got them for $59 a tire and shipping was about 10 bucks a tire.... and 205/50-16's are $68 a tire.

Thanks for all suggestions guys. I was initially set on Pirelli P Zero Nero's A/S but now the Falken Ziex's are looking damn appealing because of the price.

i wouldn't go anywhere near goodyear. Not after finding out what rsa really means (really sucks ass) when i had them on my neon. Those things were gone in 12K and never gave decent traction. That and i used to work at sears auto. Seen gt-hr's bad by the set of 4. and so out of round you could see it on the balance machine. This one girl's car rattled all over the place until we put on some potenza's instead of the gt-hr. Our stack of tires to be returned for manufacturer defect were always michelin's and goodyears. We were constantly swapping out those tires for something else.

Beware of judging a tire brand by experience with OE tires. Manafacturers contract with tire makers to provide a tire based on cost, not performance. The Goodyear RSA (for example) that comes stock on your car, is different than the RSA you buy from the Goodyear dealer (or Firestone, BFG, etc.). When DC (or GM, Ford etc.) says to the tire makers: " We want a 195/50/16 that costs $43.78, and we want 250,000 of them" they get made to a $43.78 level, not one penny more. Tirerack is a great resource for tire information and relativly unbiased opinions. If you search their website and explore it well, you'll learn a lot about tires. I've never made a purchase from them, but I use their information.

BTW: I wouldn't buy the RSA, I only used it as an example.

Way back in August i made my decision and chose to buy Toyo Proxes 4's in 205/45/16 from edge racing. These tires are excellent for an all season tire. Great handling in dry and wet although they are almost useless in the snow as i sort of expected. They were only about $70 a tire too.

I went for the CONTINENTAL CONTIEXTREME CONTACTS from Tire Rack and for the last two years I have been once Customer with big smile on his face.

The tires are by far the best performing tire i have ever driven on for snow and sleet conditions.

Drivin in rain is a blast you will enjoy it.

I have never had any problems with sliding and slipping as i did with the stock tires. They were ~75 but they are well worth the buy. They received the #1 Award in europe for Wet Winter sports driving twice in a row.

Good Luck.

I went with some 205/45R16 Pirelli P Zero Nero M&S tires on my new Motegi 16x7s for $84 each at TireRack. These things haven't stopped impressing me. Outstanding tires, highly recommended.
