brains

Post by dblsg » Thu Mar 02, 2006 11:57 am

Well, as part of being a nursing student i have to spend so much time in a medicall setting as part of my classes. On tuesday, I showed up to the hospital that I was supposed to be at and the instructor told me that she was changing my assignment for the day. Instead of being on the cardiac floor (where I was scheduled to be), she was sending me to surgery.... any ways, as soon as we go to the surgical site and introduce ourselves (me and another student), the clinical cordinator asked if we wanted to see a craneotomy. So to make a long story short... the surgeons were removing a brain tumor. The whole process was very interesting and the brain looks just like in the books... its gray, the veins are blue and the arteries are red. I just thaought this was an awsome experience and i wanted to share it with all you guys... and gals :D

Interesting... ever sit and think that some people get grossed out by like some people it's blood, we don't wanna be near poop b/c it's disgusting... ect... yet we all that inside of us haha. Like some people would be grossed out seeing someones brain yet their own brain is grossed out by seeing what it really is..., would it be grossed out if it saw itself?

Thats COOL! I've worke din Hospitals for over ten years. You get to see some crazy shit! I once got to remove a 16D nail from a guy's kneecap during graveyard shift cuz the Doc. needed help and had no tools! (crowbar + some 2x4's to support the leg and pry against.
The same Doc had me use a Dremel to cut a ring off a guys (almost) severed finger.
It is amazing how reziliant the human body is...

Very nice! I was a teachers assistent for the human anatomy cadaver lab in college for 2 years. The lab was over at the med school, and besides helping students in lab, I got to help prosect (similiar to dissection, but where you leave everything intact, just layered) several different cadavers over those couple years. I always wished I could have seen more things that were still in their living tissue state though, especially the brain. Cool thing about stuff that's dead though, is you can really take it apart and check it out. That's not too kosher on someone that's still alive.

Yeah, i've seen cadavers before, and i've even seen people die at the hospital i work at.... hell one time i helped take a body to the morgue of a guy who shot himself in the head... but this time, everything was live... you could even see the brain pulsating with every heart beat. Thats why i'm so excited about the whole thing.

(insert blow chunks here....)

The Engineers got it pretty bad sometimes at a hospital. I got ya'll beat.
When I was an Apprentice (low man on totem pole), the 480 volt garbage disposal in our autopsy room got jammed up and smoked itself.
I had to pull the plumbing and replace the broken unit. There were bone fragments jamming the unit, I know I saw painted finger nail in the pipes too, plus all of the good fleshy stuff.... :D
Worse than that is the 20,000 gallon sewage riser that the disposal drained into.....lots o' poo, socks, vomit, butt spray, wound ooze, good chit man...hahahaha

Well, what I didn't mention about the guy that shot himself was that when i went to lift his head...... my finges went into the big hole in the back of it. That was some disturbing chit right there. I kept seeing that over and over and over and over and over.... for like 2 months... *back of hand to forehead* AAAGGGGHHHHHH!

It only gets freaky when it touches you. Nothing like having full SCBA equipment on and getting a 3D turd in the chest out of a sewer line.

This one happened right before i left the hospital..

I got a call to a patient room becuase the housekeepers were totally freakin' out.
I get there and the patient already had a "play-pen" on his bed, this tells me he's mentally impaired.
I walk in the room and it smells of cat spray. I see sparks coming out of an outlet in the wall, and dude is standing STARK NAKED on a chair in the corner pissing into the flowers on his window sill.
Dude had pissed all over the room, walls, sink, everything. The floor had thick layer of old-piss that had the consistancy of jelly. The bed was fried from piss. The C/B finally blew on the outlet. The sink was unusable.
F**ing NASTY!!

So did you have to tie him up and catheterize him? Or did you sedate him? How do you take care of a patient like that?

That's interesting that you've seen that, 'cause the last cadaver we got in was a 22 year old who'd been shot in the face. We were all pretty excited to get him, because he was so young, and in perfect shape....except for his face and head. After having to deal with bodies that died from cancer and old age and stuff, a perfectly healthy 22 year is a great cadaver to teach from. The roof of his mouth was on the outside of his face though. Oops. :?

big1030 = I didn't have to do anything but take care of the electrical and mechanical problems caused by the pp. The nursing staff had to tend with scary-naked-guy. They already had him in a "play-pen", which is a big netted, cage they bolt to the bed so patients cannot get outta' bed. PP guy ripped the zippers some time during the night and trashed the room. He had a cath, but he yanked it and flung the piss-bag all over the room.
Ah, good times....
dblsg = poo-flingers, aka: fly-catchers are fun too. The naked hall-walkers are great too. Nothing like turing a corner and having a 900 year old woman standing there drooling at you. Its sad, breaks my heart, but families just dump their elders and we get stuck with em.

one time at my work this old lady with alzheimers and one fake eye decided to stroll into the lobby and chill on the couch, nude from the waist down. my work is like a 5star retirement home for rich people, so u can imagine that naked loonies on the couch wouldnt look too good to the other residents/visitors. good thing it was at 4AM! lol. sorry i dont have any stories like grambo tho, thats some brutal shit.

Autopsy classes are awesome!!!!!

Normally, when I get to see brains, internal organs, etc., they're scattered from the crash scene to the end of the block or I get to hose 'em off the dash(24yrs fire/rescue).

The worst part of the job is doing it in a small town where you know everyone.
