HELP ME!!!! I NEED CAR HELP!

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

HELP ME!!!! I NEED CAR HELP!

Post by LCPLPunk » Thu Mar 02, 2006 7:44 pm

Hey guys, been having some problems as of last night. Was on the dyno and i noticed that the breather was spewing out air like a mofo. I noticed that the air was actually a fine mist of oil and before i left the dyno i checked the oil. The level was good, but after i got home i checked it again and it was showing below the low mark. I did some reading on the forums and they said it could be attributed to the pcv system or perhaps the valve cover gasket or spark plug seals.

I installed the pcv with a catch can system, installed a new valve cover gasket, new spark plug gaskets and new grommets for the valve cover. I started her up and the breather on teh back of the valve cover was still shooting out the fine mist of oil. At the suggestion of Turbo2001RT i did a compression test and got readings of 105/115/110/165psi, what the heck is causing such a high rating in the 4th cylinder?

THe little book that came with the tester said it was most likely due to a carbon buildup, but Turbo2001RT thinks it's probably a stuck valve.

Does anyone have anymore advice, or ideas, or perhaps actually knows the answer to my dilemma?

Thanks!! Oh, and it should be noted this is for a 2001 Neon. :)

AND: OH! i forgot to mention, when i took the valve cover off i noticed something hard near one of hte springs, it appeared to be something like carbon, as it was black and a small piece broke off and the main piece appeared to be black all the way through. This piece was sitting near the lower (front of the car) right of the head.

The 4th number seems to be normal. The others are low. When I checked mine before the rebuild it was 180ish.
The oil mist is a sign of blow by. With the low compression numbers you got, I would say your rings are shot.

mine did the same thing before i melted #3 piston! at the time i blew the motor, oil was pouring out of the air filter on the back of the valve cover. good luck!

Agreed...but I am wondering, what would you look for once the head is off? Scoring on the cylinder walls? Anything else that would help before you had to take the whole thing apart?

well guys, if my problem is indeed piston rings i will unfortunately be parting out/selling this car. I just purchased a 91 Chevy Caprice Classic and for now it's running pretty good. Hopefully that'll let me get to work and school safely and reliably for awhile. :P

At the same time, if reliability was your goal, why did you mod/turbo the neon? Just board and looking for a project?!? :D

^^thats true we are, but how else would we get good deals and most importantly, DIBS?

so speaking of dibs, I call dibs on the rt headlights!!! :D

and that sucks if you have to part it out, Id rather see you stick around w/ your neon. plus, you kept it an ATX (Even if you do have the rmvb)

 So true. All that stuff is for my bro though, not me. Still, pretty funny that it's not even for sure for sale, and we all pounce like lions on his car parts. And yeah, I too would rather see you fix that car than part it out and sell it....it would be worth it. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

well...at 5 psi i was only at 158whp/156tq, so at 10 i shoulda been save torque wise. As far as detonation i never heard it as far as i could tell, but apparently it was there.

As far as parting out, i think i might sell the car for whatever i still owe on it which is $4000, OR...of course part it out.

This F@#$@#% blows! :P Lemme post up a mod list and see what u guys would want.

are you actually gonna look into what caused you to blow your piston rings? it could have been just a bad tune...if you open it up and it all melted on you i'd be pissed and take it back to the shop that set it up; i knew you wouldnt get enough fuel with just a 1:1 regulator
