Heat shield on intake tube?

Have a question about how to make horsepower going the all motor route, here's where to ask it.

Heat shield on intake tube?

Post by koreysxt » Fri Mar 17, 2006 3:56 pm

I think a lot of you have CAIs with alluminum tubing? Has anyone wrapped the tube with some sort of heat shield? I was thinking of doing this with a sound deadener (Dynamat Extreme-type)? Do you think it would help to make the air cooler? My tube defineately feels hot after driving in city traffic. It may even suppress the sound some? Thanks in advance.

Ah, my kinda person! I am always searching for ways to keep heat transfer from happening. Some say its a waste of time... little do they know :D

Check your local home depot for "PlastiDip"... comes in a spray can. will shoot a thin layer of rubber on any surface. I have my whole aluminum intake manifold covered. Keeps the heat down, especialy with the radiator blasting hot air on it constantly. do all your piping and what not too! It wont put much weight on anything either, unlike dynamat (which would probably fall off from the heat anyways). Though, the dynamat would kill the sound a hair by reducing resonation. So will the rubber spray, though.

Thanks for the tip. I was thinking of trying the "Second Skin Audio" Sound Deadening stuff. I read an article where it stood up to heat better than Dynamat Extreme.

I tried the same idea, but I used the cheap heat wrap for home heating exhaust ducts. Picked it up at home depot, its like heat tape if you want to call it that. I had it installed on my old turbo daytona and it worked great. I did get harassed from the guys at work about it though, they though it was a n#gger wrigged setup. But little did they know according to my thermostat that I had installed on the piping, it actually helped...

Thanks for the tip BlackRoseRacing. That's exactly what I used -- based on a tip from a different forum. It seems to work great, and it was < $5. It does look a little ghetto, but my engine compartment isn't for show anyway...

^^^
Cheap HP got to love it :D
Exact temp difference I dont remember, its been a few years...
But on a hot running Turbo intercooled car, that wrap worked great.
The only side effect was once in a while after washing under the hood I had to re-wrap a few pieces(engine degreaser will eat the adhesive)

The stuff we are talking about is wrap. You can find it at Home Depot. I think it's made by Frost King. It's actually for water pipes, etc. It's a foam wrap -- with adhesive, and bright foil layer. I used it on my CAI pipe. It didn't have an actual temp rating on it. I suppose one could use it on their manifold? Someone on bobistheoilguy was using it on his intake for his GTO.
