stupid question...maybe

Post by reppinthe2.0 » Tue Mar 21, 2006 7:35 pm

ok i have an 05 sxt, with 18's and 215/35zr18 tires. Heres the problem, my tires are tiny and i cant go bigger i want to drop it about 2 inches all around and get some beefy tires. I want it slammed to the ground. Should i go with springs or coilovers or what, if so which springs or which coilovers. Please help, thanks.

and keep in mind that the whole point of bags is the adjustability by the flip of a few switches.

crucial's car sits that low when parked, but i'm sure he raises it up in order to drive...

That is why I believe bags would be best for a 2"+ drop.

Sounds like you need tokico HP struts with tokico springs. on ebay 378 shipped.
Lookin my cardomin. You will see my car and how low it is now. Not too low, but just right. The rear seems to sit lower than the front, but measuring, its all even with the pinch weld.

THey ride great for what they are. Without the struts I think it would be a bit more harsh.
You feel the road ALOT more, but nothing horrible. I give it a thumbs up!
I had teins on my car before, and they dropped it nice and low, but the ride after 2 weeks went to hell!

from what i can tell you arent going to be able to get the beefier tires you want with your stock struts because they will rub. i have 225/40/18 and they are pretty dam thick compared to my old 215/35's. i have about a 2.5" drop right now but that is with coilovers. if you want to get big tires AND drop it AND not have any issues, your best bet is to bag it or get coilovers so you have the option of adjustibility. my new tires rubbed a little on bumps.. so i adjusted it 1/4" up and problem solved. after having adjustable suspension i would hate to go back to my lowering springs, but thats just my opinion, i know many people who love their springs and have had no problems.

Get some koni inserts, hack the perches off your strut housing, and then use coil overs or your choice. You will beable to run a higher/wider tire, get the stance you still want, and have a better ride then you would using a tokico set up.

Yes you can. Just take it apart and put it back together.
Heres a crappy how-to.

fyi. The rears are a pain in the ass to do. Also I would take the strut to an auto repair place and they should be able to compress it and put your new spring on for like $10 a strut. Then you don't have to deal with the specal tool for the upper mount and don't have to worry about the ghetto spring compressors you rent at Rice Zone

I swapped out for new coilovers with a reeeally ghetto toolset.

Just used the stock jacks from a dodge caravan (much stronger) and our stock jacks from a neon as my "backup" jack. I had no problems at all with body shake while it was on the jacks. Just did one corner at a time. The only tool I needed was a socket that fit on the rear bigger nuts. I couldn't find a socket for it (13mm was too small and 15mm was a little too big.) so I just borrowed one from next door.

And how were the rear's hard? They were the easiest for me...but I have drums in the back. So I didn't have to do that "remove the calipers" step.

(I've also still not gotten the old springs off the old struts, I just put them in the shed in the back yard...I'll get around to that later... heh)

yea i see alot of SRT guys run 225/40/18 with stock struts and have no issues, so thats always a cheaper option. I have even seen 235's but you cant really lower the car much or your tires will be introduced to your fender lip if you hit a bump.

i got the srt struts on mine and i am thinking about running the 225/40R18s the srt struts have a lot more room between rim and struts so you can run bigger.... just something for you to keep in mind.. cheap and easy.
