Question: Shark Fin + Sirius Mod

Post by 01rtgurl » Wed May 03, 2006 11:05 pm

Ok, I'm obsessed with getting a shark fin antenna. I love the Audi/BMW/Saab ones. After finding out after long hours of internet searches that I CANNOT get a shark fin sirius antenna.... I started wondering....

Can I buy a "dummy" shark fin antenna off ebay... and put my small Sirius antenna UNDER/INSIDE it? Will it interfere with reception? I know I've heard of people hiding the satellite radio antenna in the car, in spoilers, etc, so I assume it wouldn't interfere too much.

Anyone know? Thanks in advance

hmmm, good question. i know what you mean those antennas do look good.

what about looking at oem antennas from manufacturers that use sirius and see if you can do some wiresplicing to make it work.

vw does sirius and xm so you might be able to do that.

ooo good idea. I know I looked for the actual BMW parts and they were like $150-$200 and that's for either a cellphone or GPS only :( thanks!

the new sirius antennas are little base plates, so technically you could put that outta sight (as long as reception is not blocked).

so you think a fake "shark fin" from ebay would block reception? im off to all local dealers. apparently a lot of manufacturers are including sirius now, almost everyone  even scion, lincoln/mercury, volvo etc!

no... what i meant was if you decided to put the regular non-fin antenna outta sight, to make sure the reception isn't blocked.

Well, I went all over today, trying to get info on the shark fins.

First place: Audi dealership
Verdict: The salesman said it was for cellphone. I knew it was going to go downhill when I walked and asked about it and he goes, "Oh, you have an Audi?" Me: "No, I have a Neon, but I want the shark fin"

Second place: Saab/Cadillac dealership
Verdict: The shark fin on them is JUST for cellphones.

Third place: Toyota/Scion dealership
Verdict: The fin IS for satellite radio, but the parts guy didn't think it would work with an aftermarket unit. Aka, made to bolt into Toyota's headunit/receiver. Recommended contacting the headunit manufacturer.

Fourth place: Chevy dealership
Verdict: The AWESOME tiny shark fin on the trunklid of the 06 Vette is only for the AM/FM radio.

Maybe I'll try Lincoln/Mercury next... dunno. Saddened.

mount it somewhere out of sight (maybe in the inside of the car) and put the damn shark fin just for looks.

The sirius antenna that dblsg posted is what came with my starmate replay. I wanted to put it on the outside like it was recommended in the instructions, but I didn't like the idea of someone f'n with me and ripping it off.

So, I got some industrial strength velcro, put it on the antenna's underside, and stuck it to the top of the rear window--on the inside.

Just as a comparison, I left it on the outside like you're supposed to and drove around my neighborhood. It was good. I then drove around the same area with the antenna on the inside (like it is now) and there wasn't any difference.

I have zero reception issues locally (school, home and work). Then again, I live in NY, a popular borough/neighborhood to boot, so that's probably why I don't have any reception issues. Remote/isolated areas would definitely be a different story.

not really, as long as you have a view of the sky you are good. its when you get into really heavy trees or tunnels that you have a problem.

It should have come with the sirius receiver you purchased. You could also find them all over Ebay. I almost bought one just so that I can bring it with me in a friend's/brother's car.

If you still need it, I can look up the number in the instructions it came with (can't look it up on the actual antenna since it's mounted).

I purchased a Sirius-ready touchscreen Clarion headunit from work at a discount, along with a sirius box with JUST the one wire that connects to the HU. I don't currently have an antenna, nor Sirius (not activated yet). My boyfriend has a spare antenna but I want a shark fin

I've searched ebay again and again and no Sirius shark fins, just the pancake type  Example: http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dl ... category0=

If you could get that number, I'd be very grateful! :D Hopefully I can find one somewhere, they're phasing out the shark fins, or already have. (per Sirius rep)

I checked it out but saw no antennas. In case anyone else wants to look: http://www.xtremeracingandsound.com/index.php
Free plug: the DCSports 3" catback he's listing... that is cheap as hell! I have the same exhaust and I got it dealer cost and it wasn't too much more than that, retails for ~$700!!!
I'm gonna PM him about the antenna, thanks for your help everyone :-D

EDIT: Found it, where I would have never looked, lol. Under Exterior > Body Mods > Everything Else
http://www.xtremeracingandsound.com/sho ... cts_id=264
I was looking under audio stuff... oh well!
