Failing Fog lights - 2003

Post by SupaDawg » Mon Jun 05, 2006 3:10 pm

I've noticed this on many neons/SX 2.0 from my model year. The drivers side fog light tends to burn out on a very regular basis. My 03 only has 22,000km on it and it's already had the drivers fog replaced... It needs to be replaced yet again.

Anyone know if this is a common problem? If there was a dodge recall on the part or anything of that sort?

Help would be greatly appreciated. searching for this sort of thing is a bit of a pain in the ass.

Thanks in advance.

I haven't had any problems with either of mine burning out... I have 68,800 miles (110,699 km) on mine. :-k Is there a chance that the housing is leaking? Maybe you're getting water in there every once in a while? Does it seem to happen more often in wet or snowy weather?

Strange. It does appear i'm getting moisture in the housing. are the supposed to have an airtight seal?

Well, I believe there's a small hole in the back of them to drain any moisture that might gather in there, but I was just wondering if maybe the seal is loose on the bulb or maybe the housing itself. Has there ever been a time that you've noticed the fog light housing fogged up? (No pun intended.) I've noticed mine do it a couple times like after it rains or after I wash it, but it's never caused any problems.

Yup. I have noticed it fog up when the other one doesn't. I'll have to pull it off tonight and see if the seal around the bulb is bad. I had the dealership replace the bulb while it was still under warranty which wasn't too long ago... thus why i'm questioning it.

maybe i should replace the housing.

I'm not saying that the fogging up is what causes it, since mine does it and I don't go through bulbs like crazy, but it's something to check out. I'd say your BEST bet is to see if DCx will replace the housing itself under warranty, since they're not cheap to replace on your own. Most likely they won't, bit I'd check the O-Ring that seals the light in the fixture and make sure it's there - If not, that could very well be your problem. If the O-Ring is on there, I'd make sure the socket is fastened correctly in the housing with the 1/3 turn or whatever. I have scars on my hand still from when I changed my fog light bulbs - I hope I never have to change them again... If I do, I'll just remove the whole damn front bumper to do it... My hands are too damn big to fit behind there. Good luck and let us know what you find out!

as for the recall thing is conserned, since its not a safety related item there will be no recalls for it. Asfor the constant burning out, I have not seen it much at work but it probably depends on the area you are in. If there is moisture in the fog then thats probably your problem, the water will hit the lense and cause a cool spot and blow the bulb. Now the next step is to find out why there is water in the lense...

Mine gets moisture in the lens as well and I don't have problems with it burning out... Also, why would water hitting the lens blow out the bulb? I could understand if the water was hitting the bulb itself... But if anything, the lens on the housing would crack due to the temperature difference, if the lens was glass.
