9005 series silverstars in place of the 9145 fogs - question

Post by italrt » Mon Nov 08, 2004 12:35 pm

Ok, I put in the 9005 silverstars into my 9145-specific foglights.

Question I have is I remember reading a how-to or something of the sort about replacing the foglight fuse with a 15 Amp fuse?

Where is this fuse located and is this a necessary/recommended?

Thanks

what amperage is the foglight fuse normally? if it's less than 15 youre asking for some fucked up shit to happen to your wiring.

well that's exactly why i'm asking where it is so that I can change it if it's lower than 15A...

the 9145 stockers are 45W, and the 9005 silverstars are 65W, I'm not looking for useless comments... I think it's a simple question, i mean 35 views later and no one has anything for me?

Do they work with the fuse as it sits? I would say leave it, unless you start blowing that fuse. I'm interested in trying this also.

they work fine with the fuse as it is, but it seems like they draw more current as I see my voltmeter dips a bit more during idle when the fogs & headlamps are on... the headlights also dim slightly... but that was happening even before I put in the silverstar fogs... and is probably happening because of my UDP and crappy dying mopar battery though, but it looks totally killer and much brighter than stock

tell ya what. i'll ignore the 'useless comments' shit and give you a couple more things. the fuse would pop before the lights drew more current, it wouldnt make them dim. thats the point of fuses. the only thing i can think of is to get a good grounding kit, and/or a better (or just new) alternator.

I'd say replace that battery. Mine did the same thing up until it shorted 2 cells. I threw in an Optima and it dims a lot less than before and recovers faster. You have to mod your battery tray though.

J double R...
I know you asked in your first reply what the amps for the foglight fuse was normally (and probably would have had some advice had I given you an answer) but to give you that answer I need my original question answered - which was "where is the bloody foglight fuse?"

Regardless, thanks for your replies because now I have something to go on - all I was referring to about 'useless comments' was that you're telling me that I'm asking for some f'd up shit to happen but didn't say why or what to do about it... now you did, so those comments aren't useless anymore

alright...i've been looking to match my silverstar headlights and thought you had to mod the 9005's to fit them. Or will they pop right in no problem???

You will have to mod them. When I bought some 9005 I looked and the tabs don't match up exactly so I took some side cutters and trimed down the tabs on the 9005 that were to large so now they just pop right in.

That's what I did, just trimmed one of the tabs and I have no problems.

In '00 the bulbs were 898, then in '01 they changed to 898 and 9145 based on the bumper design with the R/T design coming into the scene having a different design fog lights. In '02 since the old '00 style bumper design was no longer used it was just the 9145 bulbs.

With higher wattage bulbs, you run the risk of damaging your multi function switch (on the steering column) and associated wiring. A much safer method is to rewire the circuit to an automotive relay, like the ones used for aftermarket foglights. That way, the stock wiring only controls the current, and the relay carries the current draw. There are also bulb holders that have larger gauge wires and are made of more heat resistant materials. From what I've read, these conversions result in brighter lights. Google "automotive+relays" and "headlight+upgrade" (I'm on the road with a laptop, don't have the links handy) Hope this helps.
