Amp overheating question?

Post by neonsxt0486 » Tue Jun 06, 2006 11:42 pm

I have a Phoenix Gold QX2350 amp pushing 350 watts @ 4 ohm to my single 12" RF Punch Hx2 dual 2 ohm. Not only is the sub not hitting as hard as it should due to me underpowering it but the amp is getting nuclear hot. It gets hot enough it shuts off and goes in to protect mode and you cant even touch it. I know the sub is wired right and all my power , ground cables are good so what could be happening? Help please!

if you have the amp running bridged, and the DVC hooked to it in parallel (+/+, -/-) thats 1 ohm mono. i dont think you amplifier is capable of 1 ohm bridged/mono operation. that is the problem if that is how you have it configured, and you may have damaged something...

it should be run one voice coil to each channel output of the amp, thats 2 ohm stereo,(and will be using the maximum safe output.)which most modern amps shouldnt have a problem with.

i dont have wuch experience with PG products. the old stuff was alleged to be pretty high end, but the newer line is supposed to be more along the lines of MTX road thunder...

I don't know what year the amp is but it is older for sure. And I followed the wiring guide on RF's website so I know the speaker is wired to 4 ohm and the amp is bridged. I have the amp mounted directly to the back seat. I noticed the cooling vents for the amp are on the bottom facing the seat. So pretty much it's not getting and circulation. Could I just use spacers to bring the amp off the seat so it could breath? Running warm is ok but to hot to touch is a little strange. Thanks for any help! Also what would yall recomend for a good amp to push 500-600 watts rms @ 1 or 4 ohms? This amp is just temporary anyway until I can find a real amp.
