Accelerator question

Post by marmar » Fri Jun 16, 2006 3:10 pm

Whenever I press the gas and then let off, my car continues to accelerate. To elaborate more... when I shift into 2nd gear and step on the gas, then let off, the car accelerates. Also, when I engage the clutch and step on the brake, the car continues to rev up for about 3-4 seconds and then goes back to normal Idle. Can Anyone tell me what's wrong?

does the car actually accellerate in speed when this happens, or does the engine just rev on its own w/o making the car go any faster? If its just the revs, then its prob the clutch slipping. If the car is indeed still picking up speed on its own without your foot on the throttle, id say check the throttle cable for kinks, and more importantly, make sure the TB is fully closing when u let off the pedal. It sounds like the TB is sticking open a bit, so it might just need to be cleaned up and lubed a bit to smooth things out. does that make sense?

The car does indeed increase in speed. Almost got a ticket because of this. Thanks for the info. Gonna go check it out right now.

Do you have a CAI? I have heard of people installing the CAI incorrectly and the throttle cable getting stuck on the clamp for the CAI....

though its a pain, if u cant see the problem from the outside, it might be wise to take the airbox out and actually look inside the TB while either having someone step on the throttle or by manually pulling the cable yourself. this will be a sure way to tell whats up. are u running any aftermarket intake mods, like CAI or larger TB? if so, they might have something to do with it. good luck!

It has a cai. I don't know if it has an aftermarket tb. The problem seems to be getting worse now. When I start the car, it revs crazy high now, and also I hear a sort of screaching sound. After about 5 min running it goes back to normal.

what year is it, and what trim is it (i.e. sxt, rt, se)?

I take it you 1. bought the car the way it is, and 2. dont know the diff between an aftermarket throttle body and the stock one? maybe take a pic and post it up.

theres no way a car can accelerate withouth more air so there are 2 possibilities.

1.- The Throttle Body/cable are functioning incorrectly, as someone said, remove the cai, tell a friend to start the car and see if the TB closes correctly.

2.- Theres an air leak in the intake, check for the clamps between the TB and the intake manifold

Sounds exactly like a vacuum leak to me. Especially when you say that it revs up with the clutch in, then revs back down. That's the idle air control trying to knock the idle way down. Plus, you said it makes a screeching sound. That could be a vacuum hose whistling because it's disconnected. Start by checking the two hoses connected to the valve cover and go from there.

the vaccuum idea above is also very possible, i forgot about that one. check the vac lines and listen for leaks. could easily be idle control.
