This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

Just installed udp and....

Post by twistnturn » Sat Jun 17, 2006 5:47 pm

I really don't feel a difference on the butt dyno. The car does seem to get to 80 faster though. My question is : the car is a 01 rt and as soon as i get to the upper RPM's (5k-6k) I hear a wierd sond comming out of the engine, it sounds like bad alternator bearings usually sound but as soon as I slow down its gone, also if im at a dead stop nothing. Its only there at wot in the upper RPM's. Anybody experience this?

Any Ideas?

By the way I didnt put it on, a local shop did. Its the unorthodox one.

I think the big difference it's supposed to make is that it, in theory, should make the engine capable of revving faster not to higher speeds, but get up to redline faster, you know?

I'm not sure about the noise, but I'd definitely check it out or have it checked out.

The noise is probably your secondaries opening up, but I could be wrong.

Im moving this topic to ENGINE, but I know exactly what your talking about. My car does the same thing, it sounds like something is rattling MAJORALY!!
I have not looked into it any farther, but it could be just the engine vibrations and harmonic noises causing other things to vibrate. Remember, with the stock dampner it is designed to cancel out harmonics and vibrations at high RPM's, now you have the UDP and it does not cancel those out....hense the weird noises...
Its been asked several times if its going to harm the motor, well I cant say yes or no, but from what I have read here, no one has experienced any severe engine problems yet...

After installing my UDP I believe I had the same noise but mine was more of a tapping than a rattle. I thought something very wrong was going on with my motor since it followed my RPM so as the engine reved the tapping got faster. After looking into it more my Alt belt that came with the UDP wasn't the right size and didn't have enough tension so it was walking on the pulley and the tapping I was hearing was when the belt started to fray and slap around. I'd check your belts or try to listen where exactly it's coming from with your head under the hood or under the car listening as someone gives it a little gas.

When I replaced the UDP on my R/T, everything was actually quieter (the stock one was bent) and I could hear all sorts of new engine sounds. The really funny thing was that the car was so much quieter, I wound up doing 110 down the highway and didn't even know it--the car "sounded" to me like it was doing 65.
Fix it 'till it's broken. Then upgrade.

Well I hope its not the belts, originally the belts that came with the pulley didn't fit (modern shipped the wrong ones, its rare that they ship the wrong thing)so I went to nappa and bought the ones that the instructions recommended.
But so far no engine problems. I can live with it, it just worries me cause it sometimes sounds like pinging.
